Attention Men of First Baptist - A trip to the Men's conference in Baltimore, MD is being considered for October 1-2, 2010. This replaces the annual Promise Keepers trip. Chili Cook-n Contest! Chili cooks are needed to compete in the Big Chili Round-Up on Wednesday, September 15. Prizes will be awarded for Best Chili, Most Original, Crowd Favorite, and Best Chili Spirit. Do you think you can make a mean chili? Come on out and show us! Contact the church office for a contest registration form and a copy of the contestant rules. All chili cooks are welcome!

Advertisement for Part-time Director of Children's Ministry - First Baptist Church, Ashland Virginia is seeking a part-time Director of Children’s Ministry to coordinate and assist in leading activities for children ages 2 to 13 years of age.
The successful candidate must have an authentic faith in Jesus Christ and a passion for working with children. They will preferably be a Seminary Student or Graduate but must at a minimum hold a Baccalaureate degree preferably with a concentration in early childhood development and/or elementary education. The Director of Children’s Ministry must be at least 25 years old, submit to a background check (including fingerprinting), and willing to attend Children’s training class(es) as assigned..
The position is part-time (16 - 24 hours a week) with a negotiable salary range dependent upon qualification, background, and previous experience. For a copy of the current Position Description, click here.

- Memorial Garden Columbarium - A columbarium is an above ground structure made of marble and granite containing niches where cremated remains are interned. One is being planned for the Memorial Garden to hold 157 urns or boxes. The cost will be approximately 1500.00 per niche. A minimum of 50 spaces must be pre-purchased to install the columbarium, which has a lead time of six months. Interested parties, please contact the church office. Our current quotation is good through August 31. 2010.
- Need a Ride - We now have volunteer drivers who are willing to transport FBC members to a doctor's appt. or church functions. If you need a ride, call the church office at 798-9014 and we will do our best to match you with an available driver. This transportation is offered free of charge as a ministry of First Baptist Church.
- Community Outreach - Here is some additional information on our new ministry project – FBC’s community yard sales. Our yard sales will be held on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of September and October. Following are the exact dates: September 11 and 25; October 9 and 23.
The yard sales will be open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. However, FBC volunteers and folks who are renting space to sell their “treasures” will be able to set up as early as 7:00 a.m. FBC volunteers will clean-up from 1:30-2:00 p.m. We will advertise the yard sales with a banner in front of the church, yard signs in the community, an e-mail campaign to friends and family, and ads in the local newspapers. We are now looking for volunteers to staff the yard sales. We need 11 volunteers per sale: 2 to sell coffee/baked goods; 2 to direct people to spaces and parking; 2 to register the sellers and collect fees; 2 to “man” the FBC Information Booth; 2 to circulate and relieve other volunteers; and 1 to provide security for the church.
God has called all of us to help win our community for Christ. This series of yard sales is just the first step in getting to know our neighbors, sowing some seeds, and having some fun in the process. Please prayerfully consider how you can participate in this outreach ministry by renting a space and interacting with your neighbors, baking a cake, volunteering to help with the logistics of one yard sale, staffing the FBC booth, etc. To volunteer, call the church at 798-5999.
- Cemetery Plots for Sale - Our church has been given two cemetary plots at the Signal Hill Memorial Park on Route 301 in Hanover. If you are interested in knowing more about these plots, please contact the church office.
- The food pantry is in Need of the Following Items: canned veggies and fruits, hearty soups and stews, canned luncheon meats (ex. spam) peanut butter and jelly, breakfast items, powered or boxed milk. Thanks for all of your great support!
- Philip, Our Newspaper Recycling Dumpster has a New Friend! The brightly colored hut sitting beside Philip is for recycling aluminum cans. The proceeds for recycling the cans goes toward Habitat for Humanity, so bring your aluminum cans and feed mini-me! Also, we want to thank Wayne Hardy for the many years he has collected the cans and hauled them to Habitat for Humanity! Job Well Done!
- FBC Work Orders - Have you ever seen something around church that needed fixing? Well now you can fill out a FBC Work Order to have it repaired. The order forms are located in the work room just inside the door on the wall clipped to a clipboard. Just fill out the appropriate section and submit to the church office. Many eyes are better than one.
- Website Updates - Our goal is to keep our website up-to-date with the very latest news, events, meetings, menus, etc., so you'll always be able to check the site for the latest "happenings" at FBC. But we can't do it without YOU! If you are the leader of a small group, are heading up a special event, or just have news you want to share on the site, please fill out a News & Event Form. Forms are available by e-mail or fax by calling the church office. Or you can pick one up at the receptionist's desk. Forms are due by 5:00PM each Wednesday afternoon.
